Chapter 9

We drove home after I spoke to Fabian. I made sure to play with Bothers on the way. I drove around one roundabout four times, which had us all in hysterics again. I slowed down at an orange light, then sped through it, losing him for the rest of the drive. I was rather proud of myself. Even though he’d eventually figure out I’d gone home, it was fun messing with him.

Once we got back, the four of us searched the internet for any social media accounts of Fabian’s. We found two. The first was an Instagram account, which just had pictures of what looked like his dog, a few photos from nightclubs, and fancy bars full of colourful bottles in the background. His Facebook account was private, like his father’s.

Bummer. “Nothing that ties him to Frances, Cory, or Craig. I don’t even recognise any of those clubs. They’re not around Cronulla.”

“Frances could’ve gone out other places.” Sarah was right, of course.

“True, but she loved the vibe around here, and most of her mates went out around here; at least that’s what happened back when I lived here. I used to see her out all the time. And now she owns the café, I would imagine she wouldn’t have wanted late nights. We could ask her partner?”

“No, we can’t,” Imani said. “He’d wonder why we were asking. It’s a weird question. We can’t exactly explain we think she’s been murdered, and we’re looking into it. He might ask questions, and we have no answers. It’s almost like we’d be torturing him.”

“Argh, why is this so hard?” I was ready to tear my hair out, literally. “I guess I could ask Michelle and Simone.” I hated bothering them and reminding them, but they knew I was trying to help, and they wanted to pitch in too. It stopped us all feeling helpless. I called Michelle. “Hey, how’s it going?” It was a stupid question because of course she’d be sad, and I hated asking it, but how could I not? There were no good options in this case. Texting was easier, but I had too much to say.

“Hey. You know. Surviving. What about you?”

“I’m okay. I was looking into things this morning, and I was wondering if Frances used to go out in the city or somewhere outside the Shire? Did you guys go further afield much?”

“Not really. The last time we went into the city was about three months ago. To be honest, since she’s been working all weekend and with her new guy, she doesn’t close it down anymore. We were lucky to see her out a couple of times a month lately.”

“Oh, okay. Thanks.”

“So, why the question? What have you found out?” The hope in her voice cut me clean through. I wished I could tell her everything.

“Not much. We might have a lead, but I can’t say anything because I have no proof, and I don’t have a motive.” I licked my lips and held back from biting my nails.
